Photo of the Day: A beautiful tradition

January 27, 2011 By Jillian

Thousands of these lanterns dotted the sky as people set them off into the air for the Loi Krathong Festival. The idea is that the lantern fills with all your negative emotions from the past year and you set that off, peacefully, and come out feeling free of them. The tradition was beautiful and we felt like it was worth a try.

Photo of the day: Jumping at the Taj

January 25, 2011 By Danny

This was the most difficult jumping shot of the entire trip. There were so many people there that getting the clearance required was just a giant headache.   By the way I’m guessing Jill did pretty well on those Presidential Fitness vertical jumping tests in elementary school.  Just saying… Special thanks to the random Indian woman with the curious name of ‘Ponch’ who took the photo for us.

Signs from the Can

January 24, 2011 By Jillian

It seems that around the world there seems to be a need to “signpost” the toilet. Here are our favorite signs from bathrooms around the world:

Blumenau, Brazil

IMGP2774

Yup, this hung over the sinks in the ladies room in an Oktoberfest tent. And yes, those are condoms in their head gear.

Swaziland

IMGP3618

Hanging over a urinal.  That puts things in historical perspective.

Angkor Thom, Siem Reap, Cambodia

IMGP6360

It’s not unusual to come across a western toilet in SE Asia that has a no “standing on the bowl” sign. This was a winner because of the warning for westerners- don’t use the bum gun to shower!  Any guesses as to what that third one with the machete is?

Forbidden City, Beijing, China

IMGP9340

Yup, the Chinese have “star” rated their toilets. Enough said.

Beitbridge Border Crossing, Zimbabwe/South Africa

When economics and err…nature combine.

Photo of the Day: A Hot River…

January 24, 2011 By Jillian

Beautiful idyllic stream, right? WRONG! Although this water spilled out into a beautiful waterfall right behind me, this water itself was anything but idyllic. This water was scalding hot. It was so hot that if you made coffee with it and put it in a McDonald’s cup and spilled it on yourself you could probably sue someone for 3rd degree burns. It was THAT hot. Thankfully after going over the waterfall it was joined by another, more normal river, making for a nice swimming hole…. kind of. Did I forget to mention the biting fish?
