Photo of the Day: Atacama Landscape

February 24, 2011 By Jillian

This striking landscape is the Atacama Desert that straddles the land between Bolivia and Chile. We visited this region as part of our salt flats tour. We were usually between 3000 and 4000 meters in altitude and it was always cold and always dry. Our skin was cracked, our lips were bleeding, but the views were spectacular!

Carnival of Rome

February 23, 2011 By Danny

Thanks to Paul Oilzum for today’s guest post.  If you are interested in guest posting with IShouldLogOff, email us at info [at] ishouldlogoff.com. Thanks!

Despite the fact that some historians date the the celebration of the Roman Carnival back 5000 years to Egyptian cults and Sumerian festivals, 2011 marks only year two of the modern celebration.

Regardless of its actual origin, it is a Dionysian spirited festival beyond doubt. Carnival itself is known for mischief and mayhem as celebrants make the most of their last chance to let loose before the start of Lent. Clothed in masks and alcohol in hand, parties can last through the night and pick up again right around dawn.

Note – Video is in Italian:

What sets the Roman Carnival apart is that, despite its distinguished lineage, this is only the second edition of the Roman Carnival in the last thirteen hundred years. The carnival tradition in Tiber (then the name of the city of Rome) abruptly ended in the 8th century and did not recover until this past year. A half million people flooded the modern Rome in 2010 for the first reincarnation. A great deal of excitement and enthusiasm for the celebrations of 2011 (February 26th- March 8th), promises to make this year’s party particularly dramatic, exciting and full of life. The festival extends through a number of streets and squares across the city where you might still be able to find some of the most beautiful apartments in Rome available for rent.

Although the celebrations are spread over almost the entire town many of the most sensational events take place in major urban areas such as the Piazza d’Espana and piazza del Popolo. Shows inspired by Italy’s theatrical heritage, the famous Commedia del’ Arte, are popular during the festival. Nearly all the performers wear character masks whose design dates as far back as the Renaissance. A daily program organized by the Association of Street Artists is the Juggling Festival.

In addition to the carnival festivities, this years celebration will include a renewal of the sister city status between Rome and Venice as well as adding Viareggio and Rio de Janeiro to the list of Rome’s sister cities. If you have any desire to visit these events you’re advised to find your accommodation in Rome soon because if you wait any longer it might miss the whole thing.

Photo of the Day: Dessert in Semana Santa

February 23, 2011 By Jillian

Semana Santa is a great holiday. This photo was taken just outside the town square of San Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas, Mexico. Festivals all over the world have one thing in common….food. This one was no exception and the array of desserts did not leave me wanting..

A Walk Through Valley Forge

February 22, 2011 By Jillian

Today would have been George Washington’s 279th Birthday. With only one natural tooth left the day he was inaugurated as President (it’s true!), I can only imagine what he would have looked like today at 279. Growing up outside of Philadelphia, the seat of the Continental Congress and where the Declaration of Independence was signed, there’s a lot of history. One of the original colonies,  there’s a lot of old (for America) history here.  The area is dotted with homes, barns and farm buildings dating back to before the Revolution.

With so many buildings hanging “George Washington slept/drank/ate here” signs, being so close to history is something I’ve always taken for granted. In fact, my favorite place to run in the area is Valley Forge National Park, a short drive from my parents. For those of you who don’t remember, Valley Forge is where the Revolutionary Army spent the winter of 1777-1778 and became an army instead of ragtag group of settlers. Although no battles were fought over 2,000 soldiers died of cold, malnutrition and disease.

A few weeks ago, with too much snow on the ground for a run, we slowed down a bit and took a walk around the park. Taking time to enjoy the natural beauty and appreciate it as a historical site, not just a nice place to run, here’s a walking tour of the park through some photos we took along the way.

Photo of the Day: Thompson Gardens

February 22, 2011 By Jillian

The peacefulness of these dried blooms reminds me of Bangkok. Bustling and chaotic, inside the Jim Thompson house the air was cool and clean and not a tuk-tuk or moto could be heard. It was a true haven from the normal bustle of Bangkok.
