When we arrived to Nhkata Bay, we were overly exhausted. After a terrible night in an overnight bus and an early dawn ride to Nhkata Bay we stumbled into the village looking for nothing more than a bed. After dropping our belongings at a small hostel near the main road, we saw a flyer for another place. We promptly headed up to the other option, checked it out and reserved a small cabin on the Lake. It is perhaps the most relaxing and wonderful place we stayed our entire trip.
I loved every day on Lake Malawi and without much prodding to leave, I would probably still be there today. Our idyllic little cabin lacked a bathroom, glass windows or even a dresser, but at night we drifted to sleep listening to the lake lap at our cabin door. We awoke to blue water and local villagers out fishing in their canoes. It was as idyllic as life gets – and now even so many months later, I look back on that shoreline as the most peaceful lodging of our trip.
IF YOU GO: There are plenty of places to stay along Lake Malawi- we chose to stay in Nhkata Bay because it was on the way to Tanzania and also a ferry stop. Ferry day in the village was a big to-do and vendors seemed to pour off the ferry with all sorts of household goods. The village is more touristy than you’d expect for the middle of Malawi, but that means there’s Internet access and some pretty decent food!
