Photo: Madrid’s Mariachi

December 9, 2011 By Jillian

You typically thing of Mariachi as a troupe of Mexican minstrels, known for their large sombreros and silver studded outfits. Second only to tequila, mariachi are one of Mexico’s best known icons. Influenced by Spanish and indigenous folk music, mariachis are emblematic of Mexican celebrations. So why then is this troupe busking in Madrid?

Probably because Madrid is one of the cultural capitals of Europe and one of the best places to catch live music. Sure, mariachi may be better known in Mexico, but Spaniards have a high appreciation for live music, no matter the venue. Jazz, flamenco and rock are popular in Madrid and you’d be hard press not to find a venue with live music any night of the week. Think intimate venues, not sprawling arenas and you’ll have a good sense of what the Madrid music scene is like. Madrid’s considered a great destination for creative types- musicians and artists, who all love the wide variety of art and history museums and cultural attractions.

IF YOU GO: Spend some time in Madrid, don’t just rush through. If museums aren’t your thing, and you’re just looking to relax, check out the live music venues or street cafes where the real atmosphere of Madrid lives. Be careful, its easy to get sucked in and before you know it you’ll be looking for Madrid apartments to stay a bit longer.
