We couldn’t go to Tibet while we were in China so we did the second best thing, we headed to the culturally Tibetan areas that surround Tibet. We spent a few days in Xiahe exploring the countryside and the Tibetan monasteries. One of the largest monasteries outside of Tibet, Tibetans come to visit the Labrang Monastery in Xiahe, to celebrate holidays or to make a pilgrimage. As part of their pilgrimage, they spin these prayer wheels, in hopes to be rewarded in the next life. Lined up along part of the pilgrimage path, the drums creek as their spun. Listening to them surrounded by the landscapes of the Gansu highlands is a mystical experience.
