Photo:Do Not Seat

November 2, 2011 By Danny

Yes, you read that right:  Do No Seat!  We found pidgin English all over the globe from Central America through Africa and all over Asia.  Something about it though never ceased to amaze us.

I have a very high respect for all people who speak multiple languages but I know that if I were asked to make official translations, I’d check them with a native speaker BEFORE paying money to put that translation on a sign.  Yet, all over the world from world heritage sites to government offices to museums and cafes….the silliest little mistakes always managed to bring a smile to our lips!

IF YOU GO:  This photo was taken at Tikal, Guatemala.  You can reach it via an overnight bus from Guatemala City or Antigua but there are daily flights as well.  If you do take the bus, upon your arrival in Flores, you should book the next transport straight to the ruins and you’ll likely get there right around sunrise.  When it’s time to sleep, take the bus two hours back towards Guatemala City to the town of Poptun and the relaxing rhythms of Finca Ixobel.

Photo:A Ride Along the Rio Dulce

November 1, 2011 By Danny

In taking the boat ride along the Rio Dulce to the coast we were able to see how life still transpires in that region of Guatemala.  I generally pride myself on being able to quickly name where each of our 20,000 photos were taken with only a moment’s glance but this photo gave me a challenge.  Sure, now that I know this was Guatemala that looks right but it could have just as been taken in Uganda, Malawi or pretty much anywhere in Southeast Asia.

I actually think the owners of this house have things relatively good.  Their house looks big, their river is pretty clean and it looks like their roof is fully functional.  I wish I could live in a house with a thatched roof like the one in this photo.  Maybe someday!

IF YOU GO: Guatemala is a great country to visit and to learn Spanish.  We visited this region on our way back from Tikal.  I didn’t particularly like the boat ride along the Rio Dulce, but the rest of the region was pretty cool.

Photo Tuesday: Fuentes Georginas

November 23, 2010 By Jillian

We spent more than a month in Guatemala studying Spanish and traveling the country.  By far my favorite place after a long day at school (well, 4 hours…) was to take the bus to Fuentes Georginas, a natural hot springs complex up in the mountains.  Although negotiating for a pickup ride to and from the complex was always frustrating, I loved climbing through the fields and clouds.  Naturally hot water flows straight from the mountain into rock pools and sitting there relaxing while looking out into the clouds is a wonderful experience.  This picture is from Mother’s Day, which was incredibly crowded, but somehow still relaxing.
