Photo:The Beauties of Budapest

October 25, 2011 By Danny

We didn’t really know what to expect from the city of Budapest, Hungary. On the one hand it was once a thriving part of one of Europe’s great empires. On the other hand, that was a long time ago and some would say it has since been left behind by its neighbors to the west. When we walked around Budapest we found a beautiful city filled with history both young and old.

We took this photo of the Matthias Church near the Danube River. The church itself was actually the coronation site of Charles IV, the last Hapsburg king, as well as a Mosque during the Turkish occupation of the middle ages. The church itself sits on Castle Hill which is known for more than what sits on the hillside.

To see more of our favorite photos from around the world check out our travel photo page. Let us know your favorites and we’ll include them in our photo of the day series.

IF YOU GO: Be sure to explore some of Budapest’s caves and the labyrinth right under the Castle Hill. Some of the things inside the labyrinth might be a bit odd but exploring the cave system is a lot of fun in its own right. Be sure to spend some time soaking in the spa and if you really do intend to enjoy all Budapest has to offer you may want to consider Budapest Apartments for your stay.

Photo Tuesday: Danube Memorial

November 2, 2010 By Jillian

The twentieth century was a difficult time in Eastern Europe.  Besides political repression and difficult economic times, many people suffered as victims under rutheless regimes.  Hungary, like its neighbors, was no different.  Along the Danube in Budapest is a memorial to the victims of the Arrow Cross regime.  Mostly jewish, the victims often dissapeared in the night and were execute on the banks of the Danube.  This was one of the most understated and poignant memorials I’ve ever seen.
