We took a plane from Yerevan, Armenia to Aktau, Kazakhstan. The ride was about 3 hours long yet was considered long enough to be an overnight flight. We arrived in Aktau bleary eyed and not knowing what to do or where to find anything. Somehow we managed to book our train tickets out of the city but that ride wouldn’t be till nightfall. To kill the time we went to one of Aktau’s main tourist attractions, the Cemetery.
No, I’m not being facetious. This mausoleum was listed in several guidebooks as the thing to do while in Aktau. We should have realized something was amis when the taxi driver didn’t know where it was. We arrived, walked around, scolded ourselves, and continued back to town. It is a rather interesting looking cemetery, but it is curious as to how this rail car made it there as well….
IF YOU GO: There really is no reason for a tourist to go to Aktau unless they are using it as a starting point to travel the silk road directly into Uzbekistan. If that’s your plan, book your train tickets upon arrival (they tend to run out) and get to Khiva as quick as you can.
