Photo: Exoskeletons

December 7, 2011 By Danny

Scary looking bugs, aren’t they?

Actually, they aren’t bugs.  The bugs have left.  These are vacant exoskeletons from some kind of insect that outgrew its encasement.  The skeletons are so stiff and strong that they stay in place, inverted against gravity, without any power of any kind.  This is a testament to mother nature and the surprising strength that sometimes comes in small packages.

Of course if the bugs aren’t your thing the rest of the Takwa Ruins just outside of Lamu are rather incredible as well.  We enjoyed the grounds with virtually no one else around.

Photo: Houseboats in Lamu

August 12, 2011 By Jillian

A house boat off of Kenya?  Yes, please.  The Indian Ocean is deceptively warm, but I wouldn’t mind living on one of these for a few weeks.  When we traveled to Lamu, we were greeted by a time warp.  The small island felt like a swahili trading post of centuries gone by.  That was of course until we noticed all of the internet cafe and souvenir boutique signs.  Nevertheless it was a great place to spend a few days.  Nothing much to do but to relax, take in the slower pace of island life and enjoy the swahili culture.

I’d still rate it as one of my favorite places to go and relax in the world.  Maybe it was the fact that we took two horrendous bus journeys and then a boat to get there, but Lamu felt like a secret island at the end of the road.  A pot of gold at the end of a bumpy rainbow if you will.  We were relieved to get there and even more happy to immediately feel included and welcomed by our neighbors (we stayed in a private home).  The community was incredibly open and inviting and in nearly every shop we were warmly greeted and gratefully shown around. Maybe I should stop writing about it?  I hope this place never changes.

Boats off of Lamu, Kenya

IF YOU GO: Take time to explore the Lamu Museum and Lamu Archipelago by dhow.  We took a day and went to Takwa Ruins, which was deserted and made for some very interesting photography.  Be sure to watch the tides if you go to Takwa, we were caught having to walk between sandbars back to our boat. Island life is very appealing and there are more islands in the Lamu Archipelago that have hotels if you’re interested in exploring the area a bit more.  There’s an airport on the coast, but flights to Lamu aren’t easy to book like corfu flights – they fill up quickly so reserve ahead.

Photo: Emerging with Treasure?

July 19, 2011 By Jillian

Laying on the beach, trying to hid from the beating sun in the shade, we saw bubbles emerge from the water a few meters down the shoreline.  This was Lamu, Kenya, not a place I’d expect to see giant sea creatures or a submarine.  Danny’s cousin got up on her elbows and we both stared as this man emerged from the water like a sea creature that’s been granted access to land.  Holding this ceramic pot, he looked over at us as we stared in disbelief.  Where on earth did this man come from?

We quickly took hold of the situation and requested to take his picture.  My apologies for the water spot in the shot, but just as soon as he emerged he put the pot down and then re-entered the water.  Without another word he was gone.  Minutes ticked by and he eventually emerged again, this time with another pot.

When we got back to the house, we shared the story with a local man living at our house.  He excitedly asked to see the picture, which we promptly showed him.  Laughing out loud he said he knew the man, and asked us to email him the photo as soon as we could. Lamu, as it should be no surprise for a tiny island, is a small world.

Lamu, Kenya, sunken treasure

IF YOU GO: We’ve written about our love for Lamu before.  We loved spending time on the Indian Ocean, and Lamu had the right mix of culture and beach for us.  We’ve also heard that Maldives holidays are nice… sigh.  Now I’m dreaming of the beach and strange men emerging from the ocean with sunken treasure!

Photo Tuesday: Why a Zebra has stripes

August 24, 2010 By Jillian

We went on safari several times in Africa.  A budding wildlife photographer, Danny kept trying to get a photo that would describe why a zebra has stripes.  Everytime we saw them clumped together in a group he would try from various angles, repositioning the car, leaning around me, etc.. to get the perfect picture.  Needless to say we have hundreds of zebra photos!

Photo Tuesday: Cattle Trucks

August 10, 2010 By Jillian

There isn’t much of a road in northern Kenya.   A badly potholed dirt track leads from Isiolo to the Ethiopian border, a journey of only about 100 miles that takes about two days.  With few transportation options along this road, the local population travels in cattle trucks, which run through the night from the border to Isiolo where a proper bus ticket can be purchased.  We were so thankful when we saw this cattle truck that we were in our friend’s car.  Although you can pay more to sit in the cab, squished between ten of your closest friends, the experience can not be called pleasant.  It’s amazing we didn’t see anyone jolted out of the back of the truck from a pot hole.  If you’ve ever read Paul Theroux’s Dark Star Safari you know exactly what I’m talking about.
