Photo: Exoskeletons

December 7, 2011 By Danny

Scary looking bugs, aren’t they?

Actually, they aren’t bugs.  The bugs have left.  These are vacant exoskeletons from some kind of insect that outgrew its encasement.  The skeletons are so stiff and strong that they stay in place, inverted against gravity, without any power of any kind.  This is a testament to mother nature and the surprising strength that sometimes comes in small packages.

Of course if the bugs aren’t your thing the rest of the Takwa Ruins just outside of Lamu are rather incredible as well.  We enjoyed the grounds with virtually no one else around.

Photo: Emerging with Treasure?

July 19, 2011 By Jillian

Laying on the beach, trying to hid from the beating sun in the shade, we saw bubbles emerge from the water a few meters down the shoreline.  This was Lamu, Kenya, not a place I’d expect to see giant sea creatures or a submarine.  Danny’s cousin got up on her elbows and we both stared as this man emerged from the water like a sea creature that’s been granted access to land.  Holding this ceramic pot, he looked over at us as we stared in disbelief.  Where on earth did this man come from?

We quickly took hold of the situation and requested to take his picture.  My apologies for the water spot in the shot, but just as soon as he emerged he put the pot down and then re-entered the water.  Without another word he was gone.  Minutes ticked by and he eventually emerged again, this time with another pot.

When we got back to the house, we shared the story with a local man living at our house.  He excitedly asked to see the picture, which we promptly showed him.  Laughing out loud he said he knew the man, and asked us to email him the photo as soon as we could. Lamu, as it should be no surprise for a tiny island, is a small world.

Lamu, Kenya, sunken treasure

IF YOU GO: We’ve written about our love for Lamu before.  We loved spending time on the Indian Ocean, and Lamu had the right mix of culture and beach for us.  We’ve also heard that Maldives holidays are nice… sigh.  Now I’m dreaming of the beach and strange men emerging from the ocean with sunken treasure!

Photo: Meeting Ali Hippy

July 7, 2011 By Jillian

If you read any travel guide for Lamu, I’m sure they all tell you about Ali Hippy.  He’s a local man makes his living inviting tourists to his home for a traditional dinner and music.  He’s a good salesman and it was a nice experience visiting his thatched hut and meeting his family, mostly because of the atmosphere.

As you can see in the picture his family plays traditional swahili tunes on a variety of instruments.  Some tunes were better than others, but the best part of the whole show were the local children that seemed to pop in for a bedtime song.  Their little faces crowded our reed mats and they even sang a song for us.

We loved spending time on Lamu.  The traditional and genuine swahili hospitality was overwhelming and we felt completely at ease and welcome on the island.  It was a wonderful spot that has found balance between tourism and tradition.

IF YOU GO: If you’re looking for a beach and a cultural experience, Lamu is a nice alternative to holidays in Mauritus or Zanzibar.  The island is still very traditional, so it certainly lacks the resorts and upscale nature of other beach destinations on the Indian Ocean.  Travelers should remember that the island is very sensitive to Western culture and should be respectful in both their dress and behavior more so than usual.  We had a wonderful cultural experience there, its a nice relaxed place to just hang out and soak it all in.
