Photo:Do Not Seat

November 2, 2011 By Danny

Yes, you read that right:  Do No Seat!  We found pidgin English all over the globe from Central America through Africa and all over Asia.  Something about it though never ceased to amaze us.

I have a very high respect for all people who speak multiple languages but I know that if I were asked to make official translations, I’d check them with a native speaker BEFORE paying money to put that translation on a sign.  Yet, all over the world from world heritage sites to government offices to museums and cafes….the silliest little mistakes always managed to bring a smile to our lips!

IF YOU GO:  This photo was taken at Tikal, Guatemala.  You can reach it via an overnight bus from Guatemala City or Antigua but there are daily flights as well.  If you do take the bus, upon your arrival in Flores, you should book the next transport straight to the ruins and you’ll likely get there right around sunrise.  When it’s time to sleep, take the bus two hours back towards Guatemala City to the town of Poptun and the relaxing rhythms of Finca Ixobel.

Photo: A Beautiful Macaw

October 12, 2011 By Danny

The ruins of Copan, Honduras, proved to be our most favorite Mayan ruins.  Not big like the temples of Tikal or Palanque but instead small and filled with amazing detail.  The site itself was smaller too and really only took a few hours to tour the entire complex.

On our way out, we came across this parrot.  I’m not sure if it was the vibrant colors or the way our eyes had adjusted to looking at the small details of Copan, but whatever it is we couldn’t (or maybe it was just me) tear ourselves away from this bird.  This is one photo of at least a hundred and I’m still wowed by the color of this fella’s wings.

Tropical Bird

IF YOU GO: We got to Copan via a private shuttle direct from Antiuga, Guatemala.  The shuttle was faster and cheaper than taking public transport and got us there so early that we were able to visit the site in the morning before things got too hot.  When we arrived to the town of Copan, Honduras, we dropped our bags at the shuttle station and walked the short road to the ruins.  When we were done we walked back, had a nice meal and were on a bus headed for Ceiba that very day.  The next morning we were on the island of Utila getting ready to SCUBA dive!
