Walking through the streets of Cusco is like walking through Inca Land at Disney World….or at least what Inca Land would feel like if Disney were to ever build it. Around every corner is another person in costume posing for pictures or allowing you to pose with them and/or their livestock. (Alright, maybe Disney would keep the llamas off the streets.)
We took this picture of this parade just after we fished our Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu and were back in Cusco for a few days to relax a bit. Instead, we found we couldn’t get from one end of town to the other without being stopped in our tracks by a parade of some sort. We caught these guys just as they were starting to go.
IF YOU GO: Cusco has a range of lodging options and cheap hotels to suit just about everyone. Getting there can be a bit more troublesome as it sits at 3,000 meters in altitude. Planes make the trip to Lima only in the morning as afternoon air can be rough. Buses connect regularly from/to Nasca, Puno and Arequipa. We were able to book a bus direct from Cusco to La Paz, Bolivia as well.
