A Motorbike in Rome

February 13, 2012 By Danny

Rome is famously known as the ‘Eternal City’ and is the capital of Italy and has more history than most people can even begin to understand.  When we think of it we think of The Colosseum, The Pantheon and its beautiful Piazza. What you don’t think about, especially if your image of Rome is defined by movies like Gladiator, is how to get around.

All over the world we were amazed at how history meets modernity and despite all those ancient marble sites people still live in the 21st century.  In Rome though, those ancient streets weren’t made for cars and so an armada of motorbikes leads the way.  I usually think of Asia when I see a motorbike but a Vespa is Italian and at the heart of Rome is its motorbike.

These bikes or scooters are available for pretty fair prices and are the best way to make way in between the heavy and chaotic traffic of Rome. Sometimes the traffic can be too heavy and a bit intimidating but still it will always be an experience worth remembering.

IF YOU GO: If you do get a chance to visit Rome, then should definitely try and visit the most famous Churches of Rome. There are more than 900 churches in Rome and you can find about the most famous ones among them from a good travel guide.  There are plenty of Apartments in Rome to rent and once you’ve done that you should’t let the traffic scare you out of your motorbike tour of the city!

Photo: Rome’s Pantheon

December 28, 2011 By Danny

The Pantheon is one of the most famous buildings in Rome. It was originally commissioned by the famous Marcus Agrippa as a temple for gods of Rome. An Emperor named Hadrian rebuilt the circular monument in 126 AD.  Somehow, despite being used continuously since the 7th century, it is one of Rome’s best preserved buildings.

Part of the allure of the Pantheon is that at 2000 years of age it remains to this day the world’s largest dome made of concrete.  It has a portico of heavy granite and a vestibule which is rectangular in shape and it  has a beautiful opening, in this photo here, to the sky in the center. Both the diameter and the height to oculus remain the same distance making the dome something of a sphere.

IF YOU GO: There are lots of similar buildings in Rome like Pantheon. There are some beautiful Rome apartments for rent as long as you remember to keep exploring the beauty of the city. Enjoy the vibrant and dynamic mix of architecture which the buildings in Rome have in store for you.

Photo:Piazza del Popolo

October 18, 2011 By Danny

The phrase Piazza del Popolo means the people’s square. Over the centuries it has served as the gateway for the road north, the site of public executions and even the pathway for an aqueduct. The present architecture was designed in 1811 and today it’s a pedestrian only throughway in a city that often feels oppressively crowded.

Rome’s piazzi are probably the best places to sit back and people watch. See and be seen so to speak, even better if you can enjoy a glass of wine or a small plate of snacks while doing so. The Piazzi typically have a central fountain (often part of the old aqueduct system), works of art in their own right. Piazza del Popolo’s fountain is a terminal of the aqueduct system. Often terminal fountains have a show, called mostra where water may flow from an animal’s mouth or mythological deity’s hand in such a beautiful way that it’s a monument to the architecture.

IF YOU GO: Going to Rome requires a certain acceptance that the best part of Rome is not in a museum or archeological ruin- it’s in the piazzas. Schedule time if you can do it no other way, to sit at a piazza café and watch the people go by. Even better if you can find one of the many apartments in Rome and do the same from your own balcony. La dulce fara niente as the Italians say, the sweetness of doing nothing.

Photo: Crossing the Tiber

September 20, 2011 By Jillian

Studying abroad in Italy gave me the perfect opportunity to get my travel feet wet so to speak. When it came time for the school field trip to Rome, I was anxious to explore without the group. Fortunately my friends, or compadres as they are probably better referred to in this situation, had the same thought.

Although we stuck with the school tour for the required visits to the Vatican and the Colosseum (and frankly that’s way more interesting with a Roman history professor than a guidebook!) we broke free and spent our late afternoons and evenings out on the town. At the time, it was just before the rush of the summer tourist season so the street performers were just warming up their acts and getting into the swing of things. The streets were full of people, chaotic noise filled the air and there was an atmosphere of being alive.

I love this photo, it’s a small pause– a small moment of quiet reflection away from the sempre vivente of Rome.

IF YOU GO:Rome is a must-see if you’re doing a grand tour of Europe. History is the King in Rome, so be prepared for several days of museums and walking the sites. Unfortunately we stayed in a cheap hotel with school, but the Italians aren’t just famous for fashion. You’d probably be a lot happier checking out Rome apartments– just imagine yourself as a roman emperor!
