This week’s photo of the day is going to be “Space” themed in honor of STS-135, the final NASA shuttle launch we attended July 8, 2011.
We were 12 miles away from the launch site in Titusville, FL for the Atlantis shuttle launch. At first it was just a glowing ball of yellow and orange fire as it shot into the sky, but as our eyes adjusted we could make out not only the blast engines, but also the shuttle’s fuselage. It took about 40 seconds for the shuttle to disappear into the clouds and perhaps another 40 seconds before we clearly heard the rumble of the engines.
I felt like small child watching the launch. As it disappeared into the clouds I couldn’t help but think of Star Trek’s tagline: Space, the final frontier.
