New Land in Hawaii

February 10, 2012 By Danny

One of the highlights of our trip to Hawaii was visiting Volcanos National Park.  The Hawaiian islands were formed by volcanos in the middle of the pacific and those volcanos continue to add land to the islands as we speak.  Usually, they are quite tame but sometimes their lava flows can and do change direction.  Rarely is this an emergency as visitors usually have several hours to move away from the slow moving lava, but nonetheless it can impact the scenery a good bit.

When we visited the volcanos we were impressed by the trail over the lava rock.  We took this photo at the start of the trail just beyond the end of the road.  It should be clear why the road has come to an end!  We were able to hike out on the lava rock for several kilometers and could actually see it running several feet below where we were standing.  We have pictures of molten lava as well but this photo is pretty compelling to us.  Later we sat and watched as the lava created new Hawaiian land, it was memorizing!

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

IF YOU GO:  The Hawaiian Islands are a great place to get away from it all.  Almost all flights to the islands land in Honolulu so check out some Oahu Hotels and then feel free to island hop to your heart’s content.  No trip to Honolulu is complete without a visit to Waikiki and Pearl Harbor!

Photo: Lots of Language

October 10, 2011 By Danny

Our first morning in China started before dawn when our bus pulled into a hotel parking lot – not a bus station – and told us to beat it. We were dazed and confused – and a bit frazzled from a stressful border crossing – but eventually managed to find our way downtown. We spent most of the day walking the streets of Urumqi while waiting for our next bus that afternoon to take a few hours onward to where we’d be spending the night.

While walking around it was quickly apparent what a strange place Urumqi was. It is something of a silk road city and is filled with Muslim Uyghers. The Uyghers are clinging to their roots as best they can as the city grows through an influx of new Chinese Han residents. We took this picture of a sign above a store because we found it so interesting how there were three languages present, yet the local language is the most difficult to see.

IF YOU GO: Urumqi is not easy to get to and on a visit to China is not typically common to go and visit. If you are coming from Almaty, Kazakhstan as we were there are overnight buses that depart each day and these are actually quite comfortable…in addition to being faster and cheaper than the train. If you’re coming from more typical Chinese locations you are probably better off flying as it is a VERY long train ride. We used it as a jumping off point to visit the Dunhuang Grottos.

Photo: Bikes and Mulas

May 18, 2011 By Jillian

Colombia was a pleasant surprise. Nothing at all like it’s been stereotyped.  We had an amazing time there, and although we only visited a few locales, we are definitely looking forward to going back.

In the hills above San Gil, Colombia there are numerous waterfalls.  We rented bikes to go the 20km to the Juan Casi Cascada falls instead of taking a taxi.  Along the way we encountered regularly intervaled signs that read “Danger Mules in the Road”.  It wasn’t until we had nearly reached the waterfall that we started to see two or three mules at a time, ladened with loads of sticks or sugar cane walking down the road.  Evidently they know the path, for there were no humans with them at all and they paid us no attenton, just continued on their way.  And just for the record, that was the coldest waterfalls I have ever swam in!

Biking in Colombia

Colombia turned out to be one of our favorite countries on the entire trip.  Perhaps because it defied our expectations and stereotypes.  We’re hoping to get there again, maybe for the holidays 2011.  Cartagena is calling our name!

Photo: Snakes on a Trail

May 3, 2011 By Jillian

You’ve heard of snakes on a plane, but snakes on a trail? It seems like any hiking trail could potentially have a snake, so why the official sign? My mind started to wander when I saw this I concluded that a) the Argentine National Parks Department were a group of jokers (doesn’t the snake appear to be smiling?)or b) likely there were a lot of snakes on this trail. We were in Iguazu National Park, a subtropical jungle, so more than likely they weren’t joking and it was option B. There are in fact 41 types of snakes in the park, many of which are poisonous.

Fortunately our paths only crossed with large lizards, birds and coati’s, a relative of North America’s raccoon. They are apparently aggressive, but sort of cute and unlikely to create the same sort of panic as a large snake on the trail. I like snakes only from a distance, a far distance. We’ve encountered them before hiking, but mostly in areas where there aren’t any poisonous snakes. I don’t think my inlaws, who explored the park with us, would have been pleased with the canyon-bouncing shriek I would have let out at seeing one on the path.

This photo was taken on the Argentine side of Iguazu Falls.  We have a collection of funny signs from our trip on our flickr page.

Snakes on a hiking trail in Iguazu National Park

We put together a mini-guide to Argentina.  Right now it’s a great place to go if you’re looking for bargain holidays, lots of incredible natural sites like Iguazu and the Valdez Peninsula and great hiking in the South.  If you’re planning a holiday to the area, we  hope our mini-guide is helpful!

Did you see that? Funny Signs

March 4, 2011 By Danny

The world is full of wonderful signs. We were enamored with funny signs, not necessarily goofy misspellings, but signs that just made us laugh out loud. Bathrooms of course had great signage, you may remember our favorite signs from the can. Here are a few that you haven’t seen before:

IMGP4572
