Photo:More Than Beaches

November 14, 2011 By Jillian

It’s safe to assume any place named Gold Coast has to be a beautiful seaside location.  Australia’s Gold Coast may be best known for its tropical climate and surfing beaches, but not too far inland there’s also a rainforest.  Yes, beach, sun and rainforest all in one place.  Few places in the world can boast such an assortment of relaxation dreams.

Gold Coast is actually a city in southwest Queensland, just a bit further south than Brisbane.  It is home to some of the world’s best surfing beaches.  The rainforest and Hinterland are less than an hour from Gold Coast city, making it possible to surf and hike in one day!

To see more of our favorite photos from around the world check out our travel photo page. Let us know your favorites and we’ll include them in our photo of the day series.

IF YOU GO: Australia’s Gold Coast City is also a popular movie location, so don’t be surprised if you run into some movie stars in the sand.  Many blockbuster and Bollywood films are shot on location in the Gold Coast region.  Gold Coast holidays are popular with a young crowd (great night life) and families, over 10 million people visit each year.

Photo: Bikes and Mulas

May 18, 2011 By Jillian

Colombia was a pleasant surprise. Nothing at all like it’s been stereotyped.  We had an amazing time there, and although we only visited a few locales, we are definitely looking forward to going back.

In the hills above San Gil, Colombia there are numerous waterfalls.  We rented bikes to go the 20km to the Juan Casi Cascada falls instead of taking a taxi.  Along the way we encountered regularly intervaled signs that read “Danger Mules in the Road”.  It wasn’t until we had nearly reached the waterfall that we started to see two or three mules at a time, ladened with loads of sticks or sugar cane walking down the road.  Evidently they know the path, for there were no humans with them at all and they paid us no attenton, just continued on their way.  And just for the record, that was the coldest waterfalls I have ever swam in!

Biking in Colombia

Colombia turned out to be one of our favorite countries on the entire trip.  Perhaps because it defied our expectations and stereotypes.  We’re hoping to get there again, maybe for the holidays 2011.  Cartagena is calling our name!

Photo: Snakes on a Trail

May 3, 2011 By Jillian

You’ve heard of snakes on a plane, but snakes on a trail? It seems like any hiking trail could potentially have a snake, so why the official sign? My mind started to wander when I saw this I concluded that a) the Argentine National Parks Department were a group of jokers (doesn’t the snake appear to be smiling?)or b) likely there were a lot of snakes on this trail. We were in Iguazu National Park, a subtropical jungle, so more than likely they weren’t joking and it was option B. There are in fact 41 types of snakes in the park, many of which are poisonous.

Fortunately our paths only crossed with large lizards, birds and coati’s, a relative of North America’s raccoon. They are apparently aggressive, but sort of cute and unlikely to create the same sort of panic as a large snake on the trail. I like snakes only from a distance, a far distance. We’ve encountered them before hiking, but mostly in areas where there aren’t any poisonous snakes. I don’t think my inlaws, who explored the park with us, would have been pleased with the canyon-bouncing shriek I would have let out at seeing one on the path.

This photo was taken on the Argentine side of Iguazu Falls.  We have a collection of funny signs from our trip on our flickr page.

Snakes on a hiking trail in Iguazu National Park

We put together a mini-guide to Argentina.  Right now it’s a great place to go if you’re looking for bargain holidays, lots of incredible natural sites like Iguazu and the Valdez Peninsula and great hiking in the South.  If you’re planning a holiday to the area, we  hope our mini-guide is helpful!

Photo of the Day: Iguana at Iguazu

April 5, 2011 By Jillian

We spent a few days around Iguazu Falls in October 2009.  Fortunately we were lucky enough to visit with family and stayed inside the park!  Eating breakfast while watching the mist rise over the falls immersed in a jungle setting was like a scene out of a movie.  Add the different species of birds, monkeys and lizards and well it was better than any movie.  This guy was enormous, or at least bigger than any lizard I had ever seen in the wild.  Unfortunately we saw him near a picnic area… I would give him my sandwich if he asked!

Photo of the Day: A Hot River…

January 24, 2011 By Jillian

Beautiful idyllic stream, right? WRONG! Although this water spilled out into a beautiful waterfall right behind me, this water itself was anything but idyllic. This water was scalding hot. It was so hot that if you made coffee with it and put it in a McDonald’s cup and spilled it on yourself you could probably sue someone for 3rd degree burns. It was THAT hot. Thankfully after going over the waterfall it was joined by another, more normal river, making for a nice swimming hole…. kind of. Did I forget to mention the biting fish?

Special thanks to Flickr user photo viewer2009 for marking this photo as a favorite.
