We were fortunate enough to catch the fifth day of a cricket match while in South Africa and even luckier to attend with the brother of our couchsurfing host. He graciously answered all our questions about the sport, it’s rules and the players. We stayed until the last wicket, much to his surprise. During the afternoon tea break a grounds crew assembled on the field to touch up the lines and clear out the space. Spectators were also allowed out on the field so we took the opportunity to get up and see what it was all about. We captured this shot just as they were touching up the lines.

Nice shot, Jillian! It’s always fun to watch sports in other countries…. I have never seen cricket played so it would definitely be an interesting experience!

We hadn’t either. Frankly we would have been confused and probably bored had we not had a friend with us!

great shot! So lucky to watch with someone who knew all the rules- I would have been clueless!

We probably bored him to death asking so many questions, but I was thankful he was there! It’s actually rather complicated when you see it for the first time. We promised to explain American Football when they come to the States!

Cool! I’ve always wanted to play but too scared I might hurt someone when the bat flies out of my hand.

I’m not sure if I’d enjoy playing cricket, but it was fun to watch. You should try it– just make sure everyone clears out behind you!

How fantastic to see cricket (our favourite sport!) mentioned on a blog. We miss cricket (we’re English), being in Turkey but we’ve heard there’s a cricket board in Ankara so we might head up there to see what’s going on sometime. Hope you enjoyed it. Not an easy sport to get used to. 🙂

Definitely not easy to get used to. Without our friend I’m sure we would have packed up and left earlier- it all seemed really confusing and we didn’t understand the lingo so that made it all the worse. I used to see a cricket league practicing in DC on the weekends, it might surprise you where else you can find cricket!
