One of these things isn’t like the other.
Buddha’s line the inner courtyards of Wat Pho’s temple complex in Bangkok, Thailand. Although the famous Reclining Buddha inside the temple brings in the crowds, these Buddha’s, tucked away in a quiet corner of the complex are completely covered in gold leaf. In fact, if you look at the black Buddha, you’ll see a square of gold leaf affixed to his face. Applying gold leaf to a Buddha is seen as a sign of respect and devotion, even the poorest of people will scrape together the money.

IF YOU GO: Wat Pho is a crowded tourist attraction. Enter through the gates near the massage school for the most peaceful tour of the site. Don’t hesitate to wander through the courtyards, the complex is enormous and there are plenty of quiet and beautiful spots. Wat Pho is also known as the birthplace of traditional Thai massage, so don’t hesitate to stop in for a short break!
