I suppose for a Disney purist, this is the home of Sleeping Beauty. Having grown up in Florida, home of Disney World (not Disney Land) I have to say that it seems more like Cinderella’s Castle to me. Regardless which of the Disney princesses you choose, Neuschwanstein Castle is the inspiration for Disney castle we all grew up with.
The castle itself is a real castle and is much larger than its Disney counterparts. It’s setting is beautiful but often prone to very bad weather, as you can see here. I took this photo as we entered the main courtyard before we entered. Surprisingly it’s not as old as you would think- it was built to be a grand castle only a few hundred years ago.

IF YOU GO: You can get a Bavaria rail pass that will allow you to go anywhere in Bavaria for less than a round trip train ticket from Munich. We did that and then our bus tickets were also covered, an added bonus. This made a nice day trip from Munich but if you’re going to basing yourself in Munich be sure to give yourself enough time at the end of the day to visit the Bierhaus!
