Photo: A Beautiful Macaw

October 12, 2011 By Danny

The ruins of Copan, Honduras, proved to be our most favorite Mayan ruins.  Not big like the temples of Tikal or Palanque but instead small and filled with amazing detail.  The site itself was smaller too and really only took a few hours to tour the entire complex.

On our way out, we came across this parrot.  I’m not sure if it was the vibrant colors or the way our eyes had adjusted to looking at the small details of Copan, but whatever it is we couldn’t (or maybe it was just me) tear ourselves away from this bird.  This is one photo of at least a hundred and I’m still wowed by the color of this fella’s wings.

Tropical Bird

IF YOU GO: We got to Copan via a private shuttle direct from Antiuga, Guatemala.  The shuttle was faster and cheaper than taking public transport and got us there so early that we were able to visit the site in the morning before things got too hot.  When we arrived to the town of Copan, Honduras, we dropped our bags at the shuttle station and walked the short road to the ruins.  When we were done we walked back, had a nice meal and were on a bus headed for Ceiba that very day.  The next morning we were on the island of Utila getting ready to SCUBA dive!

Photo: Is there anything better than a hammock?

July 28, 2011 By Jillian

There’s one thing Utila is known for – scuba diving. We went there to find a scuba diving school and get our PADI certification. At the time Utila was the cheapest place to get PADI certified in the world, so how could we not?

We spent five days learning how to dive, reading our dive books and literally living the life on a tropical island. Not bad considering we were less than three months into our trip. We met people who had arrived with the goal of getting their basic PADI certification- 6 months later they were completing divemaster certification and planning to be dive instructors. Perhaps a tropical island just does that to you?

The whale sharks, which live in the Bay Islands (Utila and it’s larger sister Roatan) for most of the year, decided to head up to Belize the week before. Go figure, and so began our dissapointing experience always “just missing” the whale sharks around the world. One day!

This photo was taken between dive trips. Our diving school (Underwater Vision) had hammocks scattered around the property, Danny was lucky enough to snag this one in the shade for a mid-afternoon nap.

Hammock on Utila, at Scuba School

IF YOU GO: We chose Utila for scuba lessons over Roatan because it fit our personality a bit better. There are good dive shops on both, Roatan is much larger, with more to do. Utila is pretty much a one horse town, although it’s got plenty of restaurants, shops and bars. We liked the vibe on Utila, but watch out for the sand flies if they’re in season. PADI certifications are accessible all over the caribbean, and there are plenty of dive spots all over the area. Do a search for Dominican Republic holidays or scuba lessons in the caribbean to see the plethora that’s on offer.

Photo Tuesday: Coke in the Jungle

September 14, 2010 By Jillian

Six hours in the back of a pick up truck along the beach on the Mosquito Coast of Honduras brought us to a landing where we could take a dug out canoe to plaplaya for the night before continuing our journey upstream into La Mosquitia.  As our “captain” loaded the canoe with our belongings and cargo I couldn’t help but laugh at the “essentials” that were being carried, for a nice price of course, upstream to other settlements.  Eventually we were deep enough into the jungle where there was no coca-cola or fanta, but trust me that stuff is everywhere!
