Photo: Emerging with Treasure?

July 19, 2011 By Jillian

Laying on the beach, trying to hid from the beating sun in the shade, we saw bubbles emerge from the water a few meters down the shoreline.  This was Lamu, Kenya, not a place I’d expect to see giant sea creatures or a submarine.  Danny’s cousin got up on her elbows and we both stared as this man emerged from the water like a sea creature that’s been granted access to land.  Holding this ceramic pot, he looked over at us as we stared in disbelief.  Where on earth did this man come from?

We quickly took hold of the situation and requested to take his picture.  My apologies for the water spot in the shot, but just as soon as he emerged he put the pot down and then re-entered the water.  Without another word he was gone.  Minutes ticked by and he eventually emerged again, this time with another pot.

When we got back to the house, we shared the story with a local man living at our house.  He excitedly asked to see the picture, which we promptly showed him.  Laughing out loud he said he knew the man, and asked us to email him the photo as soon as we could. Lamu, as it should be no surprise for a tiny island, is a small world.

Lamu, Kenya, sunken treasure

IF YOU GO: We’ve written about our love for Lamu before.  We loved spending time on the Indian Ocean, and Lamu had the right mix of culture and beach for us.  We’ve also heard that Maldives holidays are nice… sigh.  Now I’m dreaming of the beach and strange men emerging from the ocean with sunken treasure!
