Foodie Friday- Cape Malay

February 26, 2010 By Jillian

Throughout South Africa we’ve been hearing about Cape Malay food, but never really understood what it was.  We knew where the cape is, but what is or where is Malay?  What is this cuisine you speak of?
We went to the Capetown waterfront and asked the security guard the best place for Cape Malay food.  Pointing us in the right direction, we headed off to taste things which we couldn’t pronounce but wanted to try.  So I ordered a chicken curry rootie, unsure what rootie was, but figuring that anything with chicken was safe.  Danny opted for the babottie, a surprise for sure.  What came was delicious, and licking my plate clean so to speak, I was hungry for some more.

A blend of savory and spicy curries and meats cooked with dried fruit, Cape Malay cuisine represents Capetown- a blend of ethnic cuisines.   From curries to chilis to ginger, tumeric and cinnamon, Cape Malay cuisine is highly spiced and undoubtedly delicious. Cape Malay cuisine is descended from the Malaysian state prisoners that were sent to South Africa in the late 17th Century.  They brought with them their aromatic spices, culture and religion. Blending with the Dutch, English and Portuguese influence in Capetown, a distinct Cape Malay cooking style was created.

Foodie Friday – Dessert for Birthday Breakfast

February 12, 2010 By Danny

In honor of a very special birthday (that would be my own) today we woke up to a wonderful breakfast of milk tart pie made special for us by our CS hosts (the same ones with which we started our South African adventure). It is a South African Milk Tart and it made for a perfect breakfast (and will make a perfect un-birthday dessert) so we thought we’d steal the recipe to share!

The filling:

4 (6) cups of milk
2 (3) T butter
1 (1 ½) cups sugar
3 (4) eggs
2 (3) T flour
2 (3) T maizena (corn flour)
1 (1 ½) t vanilla
Cinnamon (as much as you’d like)

Boil the milk and butter. Beat the sugar, eggs, flour and maizena. When boiling add mixture and stir all the time until filling thickens. Remove and add the vanilla. Pour into bases. Sprinkle with cinnamon. For the base/crust just use whatever pie crust you like the best. Graham cracker will work for most people but I can think of a few friends from DC who specialize in making a nice Oreo crust as well.

Foodie Friday- Empanadas

October 23, 2009 By Jillian

Many people back in the States often ask us questions about the food we eat. Over the last few months we’ve begun to add pictures of our food as part of our travel experience, often squeezing foods into posts that are really about other things.

So now we happened on a better idea. Once a week this blog will be devoted to the food and drinks that we eat. We’ve done this only once so far, with hot chocolate in Colombia (word has it that we inspired a hot chocolate drinking party with that one) but now we’ll do our best to make it a regular occurrence.

Now we’re left with the question of where to begin. What to make our first food. The answer we settled on is clear as we’ve titled the post empanadas. The reason; we’ve eaten these (or something similar) in just about every single country we’ve been in since we first stepped into Mexico seven months ago.

So last night (really, last night) we made empanadas here in Argentina. While in Salta we were introduced to some of the best we’ve ever had but now that we’ve made our own, I’m slightly partial to those. As you’ll see in the video, we made baked empanadas filled with sautéed onions and ground meat. You can fill them with whatever you want, but this being Argentina home of red meat, we filled ours the traditional way.  Buen Provecho!
